EAN/UPC symbologies are most used symbologies.EAN ( European Actictle Number) is preferred in Europe , UPC ( Universal Product Code) in Northern America.

All symbologies use :
  • Modulo 13 check digit
  • Same encoding table
  • Only digits can be encoded
  • Fixes size (8,13 for EAN), (8,12 for UPC) , last digit is checksum
  • optional 2 or 5 digit Add-on

PDF417 is stacked symbology used for encoding large data amout with Reed-Solomon error correction.

Main features:
  • Large data amout to encode, 2710 digits in numeric compaction mode, 1850 characters in text compaction mode or 1108 bytes in byte compaction mode
  • Reed-Solomon error detection/correction
  • Structured append support
  • Versions:
    • Standard : basic version
    • Truncated : save some space, right row identifier isn't used, same capacity as standard version
    • Macro DPF417 : added structured append and some additional info, as FileName, TimeStamp...
    • MicroPDF417 : save more space, create very small barcode image, but with decreased data capacity

Main characteristic:
  • Members 2 of 5 family have a simple code structure, width modulated. Each character consists of five elements, two of which are wide, hence the name "2 of 5".
  • Numeric only symbologies
  • Only two elements of different widths: narrow or wide. A wide element is typically two to three times wider than a narrow element
  • Even-parity character check
