Australia Post is a type of 4-State bar code. Each symbol comprises four types of bars each of which is identified by both a name and a value. 4-State bar code elements: Using this 4-State format allows the code to contan more information in a set length than other postal codes while making the symbol easier to decode. It also allows the codes to be reliably printed using simple printing techniques such as dot matrix, bubble/ink jet and laser. |
Structure of Australia post bar code symbol:

- Format control code - identifies the barcode’s format, which determines the configuration of fields and bars that applies to the whole barcode.
- Sorting Code No. (DPID) - This 8-digit sorting code represents the Delivery Point Identifier (DPID), which dictates where Australia Post delivers the mail. This can be a letterbox, a PO Box or a rural mail bag. Each address in Australia is allocated a unique DPID.
